5 out of 5 stars clear, simple, job done.   July 27, 2010

I've had one of these before and I used it relentlessly for years until eventually I wore the numbers out round the dial. I've tried other cheaper models by different manufacturers but they never match up. the Silva exp4 is just clear, simple, easy to use, robust and dam good at what it does. no wonder the military use them. Job done I say.

5 out of 5 stars Top notch compass   June 27, 2010
Ian Grainger-allen (devon, UK)
Very simply put, I have had a little time with this compass and it does everything I could expect at a good value price.

If it where to be improved... luminous paint here & there perhaps.

This is more than adequate and certainly adequate for the Moor. On that atrocious pun I will bow out.

5 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the tin.......   June 18, 2010

Excellent value for money for such a quality item. Main problem with cheap compasses is that they can show any where as being North.
Not with this one. Light easy to use and nicely made. The bearing on the needle makes for super repeatability.

STEVE............

3 out of 5 stars Ink abrasion problem?   June 17, 2010

I've had two Silva Type 4's - I bought the second one when the black ink showing the degree marks around the dial of the compass became too faint to read. Looks like they have been rubbed off. I treated the compass with care, and I think that this is a fault and that the compass should be more robust with respect to this kind of wear & tear. Anyway the replacement compass is remaining readable so far, and other than this niggle, it's reliable kit. Has anyone else noticed this problem?

5 out of 5 stars It's never got me lost!!   April 21, 2010

Silva do make a decent compass, good quality, easy to read, the luminous markings are nice for night reading, and the little rubber points on the plate ensure it doesn't slide on the map. Not the cheapest, but I doubt I'll ever need to buy another. Distances are especially easy to measure on this one as it caters for all map scales. Recommended.
